Traditionally, it's common for astronauts to denote the fact that they've flown with a "Mach 25" patch, recognizing the speed reached during spaceflight. None of the three astronauts that visited today wore one of those, though they were all entitled to.
Instead, they wore a more prestigious patch, one that not all flown astronauts are eligible to wear -- the "100 Days" patch, available to long-duration crewmembers who spend more than, natch, 100 days in space. In Peggy Whitson's case, the patch is understatement; if they were additive, she could wear three of them and still have 77 days left over.
The official said that, in his mind, the fact that they were wearing the "100 Days" patches instead of the "Mach 25" patch reflected a shift in NASA and space exploration -- we're moving from just visiting space to living there.
Which is pretty exciting, to be sure. And then you have this bit moonwalker Alan Bean wrote in his diary in 1973 (quote taken from Homesteading Space): "In Apollo you go for just a visit or trip to zero g. In Skylab you live it."
Of course, Peggy has more time in space than the first six Skylab astronauts put together, so you can't say we haven't made progress.
