STS-128 Update

Wednesday 19 August 2009 at 09:32 am DiscoveryPer Spaceflight Now:
After a lengthy technical discussion, NASA managers decided Tuesday the shuttle Discovery's external tank can be safely flown as is, without the need for additional time-consuming inspections of its foam insulation, clearing the way for launch next week on a space station resupply mission.
...
But late Tuesday, agency officials speaking through Twitter said "the tank discussion is over and everyone had the chance to offer a viewpoint. At this point, the FRR decided we're OK to fly as is."

An official launch date is expected to be set Wednesday, but the internal processing target is Aug. 25 at 1:36 a.m. EDT, one day later than the previous target because of unplanned work at the launch pad.

NASA Trek Wars

Having started as a NASA educational project, Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey will feature William Shatner and Mark Hamill, as well as Chris Pine, Brent Spiner, Robert Picardo, et al.

Ares I-X Update

Tuesday 04 August 2009 at 12:12 pm Ares I-XPer Wired:
The first tall, skinny Ares I-X rocket is now more than half assembled at Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building.

Last week, a host of new pieces were stacked onto the test rocket, putting it over the halfway mark, NASA announced in a blog post titled, “Really Taking Shape Now.”

The Ares I-X is set for an October 31 test flight, but along with the entire next-generation NASA Constellation program, its future is uncertain. The Human Spaceflight Review, initiated by the Obama administration earlier this year, could recommend wholesale changes to NASA’s future.

Nonetheless, the program continues to soldier on, as can be seen from these construction photos. Below, we see a custom-designed overhead crane, which places the components onto the stack.

Countdown of Countdowns

Tuesday 14 July 2009 at 1:19 pm Endeavour during roll-outAnd then there were eight.

And, soon, seven. STS-127, scheduled for launch tomorrow around 5 p.m. CDT, is one of only eight remaining shuttle launches; if things go well, by the end of the week, the shuttle will only have seven more times to fly.

NASA has put together a list of the remaining flights, which are scheduled to take place by the end of next year.

Ares I-X segments

Per Spaceflight Now:
NASA moved one step closer to a long-awaited test flight of the agency's new moon rocket Wednesday night, when engineers hoisted the first piece of the booster atop an Apollo-era launch platform.
...
But the flight's launch date is anyone's guess.

NASA says the official launch date is August 30, but officials openly anticipate the key test will be put off until at least this fall ...

The aft assembly of the rocket's first stage rolled to the 525-foot-tall Vehicle Assembly Building from a preparation facility Wednesday. Workers lifted the booster segment, packed with flammable solid propellant, onto a mobile launch platform inside a high bay in the building's northeast corner.
...
Officials expect to stack the first stage's other three segments within the next ten days, according to Cowart.

Skylab's Just Fine

Wednesday 08 July 2009 at 1:56 pm SkylabPer the Dessert Dispatch:
This Saturday marks 30 years since the United States’ first space station, Skylab, fell out of orbit in 1979 and reentered the atmosphere. When it did, chunks of debris lit up the sky over the Indian Ocean and plunged into the water.

Some sizable pieces, however, rained down on the small coastal town and racked up a $400 “litter” fee that the shire of Esperance billed to NASA.

But nobody’s paid the fine — until now.

Barley, an on-air personality for the Highway Stations, based in Barstow Station on East Main Street, is flying to Australia on Wednesday to present a check to Esperance officials that radio show listeners donated to pay for the fee.
