iHulk

Monday 31 August 2009 at 10:19 am Hulk artworkI initially found it just kind of interesting that Disney is buying Marvel; it'll be fascinating to see if there are any visible changes that come out of that.

However, it quickly occurred to me that the most interesting for me, as traditionally far more of a DC person, is whether I'll have to reevaluate my allegiances now that the Marvel characters are under the partial control of Steve Jobs.

Louis Vuitton astronaut ad

OK, I'm pretty much obligated to blog about the new Louis Vuitton ad featuring Sally Ride, Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell.

Here's a Wall Street Journal article about the ad, and the LV Web site features a video with the three astros.

My favorite part is the fact that, while all three astronauts are looking at the moon, Buzz for some reason has a much bigger grin on his face.

Internet Killed The Album Star

Monday 15 December 2008 at 09:35 am smashing pumpkins zeitgeistI've speculated about this a while back, and now it's becoming a reality. Billy Corgan has announced Smashing Pumpkins will no longer create albums, since iTunes makes the album irrelevant in favor of singles.

Frankly, I'm not quite ready to abandon buying a CD in favor of just picking up new songs from favorite artists as they're released. Which raises a related question of to what extent most albums today are cohesive works, and to what extent they're just collections of singles. And then, along those lines, if an artist I really liked released a single a month for the next year, followed by release of the 12 tracks at the end, how would I buy them? I'd rather have the CD, but would I not buy the songs for the better part of a year?

What would you like to see music look like two years from now? Would you prefer the focus be on the album, or the single? What's the best way of handling it?

OK, Now...

Wednesday 15 October 2008 at 8:05 pm For quite a while now, friends have been wanting to talk about how I'm a "published author," and I've asked that they not use word "published," since the book wasn't actually out, and I wanted to save that for when it was true.

OK, now you can say "published."

I'm a bit happy.

richard with ppk stuff

Robert Pearlman of collectSPACE shared this picture with me.

The guy in white is Richard Garriott, who is the son of one of my co-authors, astronaut Owen Garriott.

The stuff on the table is part of what Richard is taking with him when he launches Sunday for the International Space Station.

The item closest to his hand is a photographic print of the cover of our book, which will start shipping around the time Richard flies.

Not a bad week, really. I'm a bit excited.

Steve Jobs Killed By Taikonauts!

Friday 26 September 2008 at 10:38 am Shenzhou 7 launchDetails, you know?

OK, so technically, Shenzhou 7 hadn't launched when China's official news agency posted a post-launch story.

But I've been a reporter, and I understand working under deadline. You want to have a piece ready to go as quickly as possible, so you write the things you know, and fill in the rest later. And in the internet age, the difference between "post" and "save without posting" can be a quarter-inch.

Arguably, in that respect, this is no more sinister than the recent accidental publication of Steve Jobs' obit.

Except ... those quotes don't sound like place fillers. It reads like that was intended for publication, regardless of what actually happened. Fascinating.

Southern Survival Guide

Wednesday 24 September 2008 at 4:29 pm oxfordA great article from The Commercial Appeal:
Welcome to Oxford, East Coast Media Elite. I'm sure your advance sheet included tidbits about William Faulkner, cotton fields and Ole Miss football.

But here are a few things I'm quite sure were left off your crib notes. Consider them survival tips while you're visiting us down South.
More than a little of it sounds pretty familiar.
