iHulk Update

Friday 04 September 2009 at 12:55 pm Hulk artworkPer Newsarama:
As rumors about a new Apple touch-screen tablet heat up, it's looking more and more likely that Spider-Man and Superman may soon be read by using fingers to zoom and scroll through a digital comic book.
I can't speak to Superman. But Spider-Man? It's reaching a bit, but those dots do connect. Comics aren't a killer app for the tablet, necessarily, but if you knew there might soon be a sea change in the way the content was delivered, it would be a good time to invest in them, wouldn't it?

Monday 31 August 2009 at 10:19 am Hulk artworkI initially found it just kind of interesting that Disney is buying Marvel; it'll be fascinating to see if there are any visible changes that come out of that.

However, it quickly occurred to me that the most interesting for me, as traditionally far more of a DC person, is whether I'll have to reevaluate my allegiances now that the Marvel characters are under the partial control of Steve Jobs.

Friday 31 July 2009 at 1:51 pm Nintendo DS artworkI've said this before, but a story today just drives it home.

Nintendo is attributing a decrease in profits to Apple, saying that the iPhone and iPod touch are hurting sales of the Nintendo DS.

This, to me, just supports my argument that the two companies should figure out a cooperative arrangement. In my mind, they have somewhat compatible cultures, and, more importantly, face two common enemies -- Microsoft and Sony -- that they could benefit from teaming up against. I would love to see Nintendo license its back catalog for the iPhone and the Apple TV. The former might hurt DS sales slightly, but could make up for it in catalog sales. The latter shouldn't hurt Wii sales too much, since the real draw of the Wii is the controls, and, again, would open new catalog sales. Apple could provide experience with its online store for Nintendo to beef up the strength of the virtual console.

And that's just the benefits that could be gained from existing products. I would love to see what the two companies could come up with together if they were really focused on cooperating to compete with Microsoft and Sony.

Under The Wire(less)

Monday 15 June 2009 at 09:28 am iPhoneAccording to MacNN, AT&T has sent out the word that "Only preorders placed [on] Friday, June 12, 2009 or earlier are expected to arrive in time for the 7:00 a.m. opening on Friday, June 19th, 2009. Customers will receive an email notification when their new iPhone 3G S has arrived and is available for pickup."

After a couple of false starts, I placed my pre-order at my friendly neighborhood AT&T store at like 6 p.m. on Friday. Just barely, but good enough.

Thursday 11 June 2009 at 11:54 am Trek communicator artI blogged a while back about my disappointment with the official Star Trek iPhone app, and so I'm hoping that Star Radio Communicator makes me a bit happier. It at least seems to provide a bit more Trek look-and-feel to your iPhone. (There's a similar app, Kirk's Communicator, that seems to be similar, but I'm trying this one first, since the graphics seem to be a bit better.)

Set iPhone To Stun

Wednesday 06 May 2009 at 09:27 am Star Trek app screenshotAs is the way things are done these days, the new Star Trek movie is being promoted with a free official iPhone app. I haven't had a chance to download it yet, since it's too large to download directly to the iPhone, but has to go through your computer instead. Even so, I'm already disappointed with it. The app is a phaser shooting game, which Gizmodo describes as "really pretty terrible."

Frankly, though, my disappointment doesn't even have anything to do with the quality of the game. It seems like there's such an incredible opportunity for an app that would give the iPhone a cool Trek look-and-feel. The iPhone is practically something out of 24th-century Trek; how hard would it be to create a piece of software to take the technology and make it be more Trek-like?

So, for the Trek fans in the crowd, what would you want from a good Trek iPhone app?

Relic Different

Monday 16 March 2009 at 11:25 am (Cross-posted elsewhere. Sorry, Heather.)

OK, I need help and or advice. I have, over the years, collected a handful of old computers that, really, you know, I just don't need. An old Mac Plus. An early PowerMac Performa. A stripped-down Lombard G3. Etc. I really hate the idea of just putting them in my trash can, but I really don't know what to do with them. Anybody want them, or know what I can do with them?

Question

Wednesday 21 January 2009 at 6:05 pm I'm hoping that the iPhone users in the ATW audience can help me with something.

I'd like to find a game that is free (or close to it), that two people can play on one iPhone, and that doesn't require lengthy involvement (no Monopoly, for example.)

Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!
